The Breakthrough Magnet School is a school that:

Turns breakdowns into breakthroughs,

Has high expectations for students,

Creates a partnership between parents, teachers and students,

Connects learning to the real world,

Is small and offers a sense of belonging,

Teaches students through hands-on experiences,

Tells students, “You can do it!”,

Has academic excellence, following state standards,

Values community service learning,

Is richly diverse and…Tuition Free!

What is a Breakthrough?

The “breakthrough” philosophy recognizes that we can learn from every mistake, that every cloud has a silver lining, and that every breakdown can be turned into a breakthrough.

A breakthrough is an open door; an opportunity for developing problem solving abilities and developing personal stamina in the face of challenge or adversity.

Calendar/Hours

Breakthrough’s day begins at 8:30 am and ends at 2:55 pm. After-school enrichment programs for all students grades K-8 run from 3:00 to 4:00 pm Monday through Thursday. The school year follows the same calendar as the Hartford Public School System (with slight variation).

Dress Code

A school uniform adds to the academic decorum of the Breakthrough Magnet School, therefore, the wearing of the uniform is mandatory. It is a visible sign of identity and belonging within the school and serves as a gentle reminder for children that they wear special clothes to go to a special place. A school logo shirt is worn with khaki, black or navy pants or skirt by all students from PK-grade 8.

The academic day at Breakthrough Magnet School begins at 8:30 and ends with dismissal at 3:00. Children are encouraged to participate in our enrichment programs, which run from 3:00-4:00pm on Monday through Thursday grades K-8. Activities such as homework club, ceramics, sports, art, music, cooking and crafts are offered. Primary students are placed in programs by their classrooms teacher. Older students sign up for activities that fit their interests, age and abilities. Teachers, parents, and community members interested in working with our children teach the classes. All students that are transported to school by bus must participate in the enrichment program, unless parents arrange transportation to have them picked up at 3:00 each day. Parents must inform the classroom teacher if they will be picking their child up at 3:00 so they will not be scheduled for enrichment programs.
