The mission of the Breakthrough Magnet School is for staff, families and community members to work in partnership developing students as models of outstanding character. Character development permeates our broad-based instruction, producing students with academic rigor, aesthetic appreciation, and physical expressiveness aimed at contributing to others.
Breakthrough has operated variously since September, 1991 as a “school within a school”, charter school, and inter-district magnet school.

What is a Breakthrough?
The “breakthrough” philosophy recognizes that we can learn from every mistake, that every cloud has a silver lining, and that every breakdown can be turned into a breakthrough.
A breakthrough is an open door; an opportunity for developing problem solving abilities and developing personal stamina in the face of challenge or adversity.

Calendar/Hours
Breakthrough’s day begins at 8:30 am and ends at 2:55 pm. After-school enrichment programs for all students grades K-8 run from 3:00 to 4:00 pm Monday through Thursday. The school year follows the same calendar as the Hartford Public School System (with slight variation).
Dress Code
A school uniform adds to the academic decorum of the Breakthrough Magnet School, therefore, the wearing of the uniform is mandatory. It is a visible sign of identity and belonging within the school and serves as a gentle reminder for children that they wear special clothes to go to a special place. A school logo shirt is worn with khaki, black or navy pants or skirt by all students from PK-grade 8.
