Breakthrough Magnet School’s Common Understandings & Expectations

As a parent of a Breakthrough student I will commit to the following principles each school year so that our family will continue to be enrolled at the Breakthrough Magnet School.

1.    I will support respectful, polite communication and put-ups with others.  I understand that conflicts between students will be resolved through problem-solving process with staff guidance, with parents included when necessary.
2.    I will be a partner with BMS staff in “breaking through” any learning challenges by attending the Student Assistance Team (S.A.T.) meetings to plan effectively for my child’s school success.
3.    I will have my child attend and be punctual to school 100% of the time unless ill and return to school with a note of explanation (attendance record below 95% or more than 9 days absent or late will require an S.A.T. meeting.)
4.    I will have my child complete homework and support his/her completing class assignments daily or seeking help to handle breakdown.
5.    I will sign my child’s required reading record daily.
6.    I will honor regular daily school dismissal procedures or send a written note with my child at the beginning of the school day.
7.    If my child rides the school bus I will support his/her following the bus rules (staying in seat, using inside voices, speaking politely, and hand to selves) or suspension of bus privileges.
8.    I will send my child to 4 weeks of summer school if he/she scores below the proficient standard in reading, writing, or math.
9.    I will support my child’s following the BMS school rules.
10.    I will have my child complete the summer reading requirements and submit them to his/her teacher on the first day of school.
11.    I will have my child abide by the dress code policy of Breakthrough Magnet. Uniform shirts should be tucked in and pants worn pulled up around the waist with a belt.
12.    I will pick up my child from after school detentions, held from 4-5 p.m. for serious discipline problems, causing him/her to miss the regular school bus.
13.    I will complete 12 hours of volunteer activities during each school year. This includes but is not limited to:
•    S.T.E.P. course on BMS discipline/character curriculum
•    Breakthrough Blooms (spring)
•    Library book shelving
•    Art room matting/framing student work
•    Room parent/PTO meeting/fund raiser support
•    Class trip chaperoning
•    Assistance with annual musical/play production

By signing this form, I acknowledge that I have read, understand and agree to abide by the Common Understandings and Expectations for Breakthrough Magnet School.  Non-compliance will result in exclusion from our magnet school at the end of the school year.

Thank you,
Norma Neumann-Johnson, Principal
